In this month’s edition of my newsletter, the focus shifts—for a change—from inspiring women to two young men who fled Iraq and rebuilt their lives in Germany.
However, a woman connected us which showed me how synchronicities enter your life when you least expect them.
We met thanks to Eva, a teacher in Berlin, who was looking for a host company for an Erasmus+ exchange. Someone from one of the flood-affected villages around Valencia passed her my name. When we spoke, we realised—somewhat unbelievably—that we had gone to the same school in Germany and spent our childhood only metres apart, without ever knowing each other. I love those moments that remind you how strangely connected the world can be, in particular when you are aligned with your purpose.
And the story of Farid and Shallal is not just of “two interns.” Their story is one of perseverance and resilience. In a time when public discourse around migration has shifted from “refugees welcome” to “how to protect our borders,” I believe stories like theirs need to be heard even more.
I was so impressed by their drive and determination that I decided to dedicate this month’s newsletter to them.
